Yesterday I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Oakland. At first, all I did was carry wood and hammer down some nails. It wasn't too exciting, but it felt like I was doing some good old-fashioned honest work for a change. Later that morning, I switched stations because Rob Kim and Mike Lee needed some help. Their task? SLEDGE HAMMERING. I was pretty thrilled at the idea of pulverizing rocks with my super hammer. And for the first five minutes, I had so much fun, watching rocks fly everywhere as I swung with all my might. After that, my arms started to give and I got sick of all the little pebbles flying into my mouth. I hammered away for a good 30 minutes or so and then it was time to go home.

Yeah...I had a good time, but I couldn't help thinking that what I had done in those few hours didn't really amount to anything. The people regularly on the job, on the other hand...the people who sacrificed their precious time for this cause day after day...they were really making a difference out there.

When I grow up, I want to do something that will be worthwhile and meaningful every single day that I'm doing it.
